Much of that vertical space is occupied by cooling fans, but Apple says the Mac Studio makes minimal noise. The Mac Studio has the same 7.7-inch (19.7 cm) square outline, but is more than twice as tall, clocking in at 3.7 inches (9.5 cm) high. To hold the M1 Ultra-or a less expensive M1 Max-Apple introduced an entirely new Mac that looks like an inflated Mac mini. Apple has now unveiled the M1 Ultra, which bonds two M1 Max chips together for double the performance. The performance of those chips, particularly when measured against their low power requirements, was stellar. In 2020, Apple started to transition Macs away from Intel processors to Apple silicon, beginning with the M1 system-on-a-chip and a year later adding the even more powerful M1 Pro and M1 Max to the family. Mac Studio with M1 Ultra and Studio Display Redefine the Mac Lineup Then Apple focused on the big announcements of the day: the entirely new Mac Studio, powered by the insanely fast M1 Ultra chip and accompanied by the stunning 27-inch Studio Display. Given its unique origins that are defined by the modern times in which it was written, The Martian is a case study for Ong’s writing, providing a clear example of how communication style and structure are defined by advancing technologies and changing mediums. At its March 8th Peek Performance event, Apple freshened its iPhone and iPad product lines with a new third-generation iPhone SE and fifth-generation iPad Air, along with new green hues for the iPhone 13 line. In choosing this unique format, Weir exemplifies Ong’s argument that someone’s chosen medium of communication fundamentally changes how they think about their work. Constantly being constrained by the perspective of someone looking back into the past dictates the pace of the story and limits the ability of the writer to employ complex literary techniques such as in-depth imagery. Similarly to the orally-informed medium of social media, The Martian is a dominantly plot-driven novel, with text being direct and events occurring at a fast pace. Interestingly, Weir’s choice of a medium also impacted the plot structure of his novel. ![]() Weir makes heavy use of intertextuality in this way, conforming his storytelling methodology to the medium in which he initially wrote it. ![]() Weir mimics this style by taking a stream-of-consciousness approach to his writing: in his daily logs, the main character Mark frequently goes off on tangents, makes references to pop culture, and cracks jokes, all of which are trademarks of casual oral communication. This crops up in long, run-on sentence structures that mimic oral conversation as well as in content that is written in a short time frame and thus lacks many of the rhetorical or literary devices found in more traditional literary works. Social media is a relatively informal sphere in which academically proper grammar is not prioritized and writing is heavily informed by oral thinking patterns. The style in which social media posts are written informs Weir’s writing style. Several connections between the construction of these daily logs and the structure of blogs and social media posts arise. For example, most chapters of The Martian are actually collections of daily logs written by the main character, Mark, who is stranded alone on Mars. The unique origins of The Martian as a series of blog posts informed both the style of the book and its plot structure, exemplifying Ong’s assertion that advancing communication technologies both inform how we communicate and how we think. In his novel The Martian, Andy Weir both employs and exemplifies several ideas regarding the evolution of human thinking alongside methods of communication that Walter Ong develops in his book Writing Restructures Consciousness. ![]()
